An example of a Civ III game

Spearman The Spearman- he makes an excellent defender for your cities during the Ancient Times

Warrior The Warrior- seems pretty useless at first, however he can be upgraded to the Swordsman when you research Invention
Archer The Archer- he is the first (good) attack unit you can build.
Swordsman The Swordsman- best unit there is during the Ancient Age.

Civilization III & Civilization Conquests Basics

First of all, to play this game, you need a CD-ROM. Once you have that, you can play the game. The same is true for Toontown.
When you play Civilization III, these are some things you should try to do. First, build lots of cities in order to get as much land as possible. Keep in mind, however, a city must have at least 3 citizens in it's population to build a Settler. Make sure to garrison your cities so they aren't raided or captured! Then, you should build up your armies to protect against barbarians and invaders. After each city has at least one unit protecting it, you should build up your culture (by building wonders and city improvements) so enemy player's cities will want to be part of your empire. Cities and territories are very valuable, so you want to have as many as possible. If necessary, when you go to war, be on the defense as well as the offense. Garrison your borders and your capital thickly. Don't hesitate to destroy enemy units (when at war) as soon as they cross your borders, so they pose no threat. Carefully think over your tactics. Some units (such as the Spearman, Pikeman, Hoplite, or Musketman) are best at defense and some units (such as the Archer, War Chariot, Chariot, Mounted Warrior, or Horseman) are best at offense, while others (like the Swordsman, Legionary, Impi, Immortals) do good at both. Use defenders to protect your cities and groups of units, leaders, and armies, and use the offenders (hah hah) in those unit parties and armies. Also, when at war, it's good to have barracks in each city in order to produce Veteran units.
For Civilization III Conquests, my only advice is to do as the scenario introduction and the above information suggests. It works! And don't forget, you can create your own scenarios.
